* Studio facilities are not available, but the accommodation spaces can be used for limited production purpose.

History The program was inaugurated in 2003 to meet the demands of foreign artists and curators seeking opportunities to stay in Tokyo for a certain duration of time. At the time, no systematic residence programs were hosted in Tokyo.

Program Objectives The program aims to create a place for international exchange where artists and curators share their experience and knowledge with one another. In support of the artists and curators, the program provides accommodations in Tokyo, assistance for exchange, information and resources, and opportunities to join talks and events organized by AIT.

Application Procedure

The program does not accept unsolicited applications submitted directly by artists and curators. All applications must go through a partner organization(e.g. IASPIS, FRAME, Fonds BKVB and others).

Achievements and
Outcomes

From 2003 to 2007, the program has hosted more than 27 artists and 3 curators.
In terms of outcomes, AIT residency artists have taken part in various projects in Japan and overseas: Federico Herrero at Watari-um (2005-2006) and EXPO 2005 Aichi art project (2005); and Yason Banal at 2006 Singapore Biennale (2006).
Artists have also participated in events organized by AIT, such as the 12 Hour Museum (2006, Panasonic Center Tokyo), talks, performances, and exhibitions.
