Facility Description

Located at the Festival Gate, an urban amusement facilities which opened in 1997, in an area adjacent to the downtown areas encompassing Shin Sekai and Nipponbashi.

History

Four editions of “Asia Contemporary Dance Festival,” which were held between 2001 and 2005, are incorporated into the overall program scheme of Dance Box, which aims to establish an environment that realizes exchange and production for Asian and Japanese artists.

Program Objectives

Dance Box’s activities are designed to explore the possibility of shaping an identity for Asia, in which distinct local dance forms are studied in order to build a platform for a broader exchange of diverse cultures in the future.

For the 2007 residency program, Pichet Klunchun has been invited from Thailand to collaborate with dancers and actors from western Japan and to stage for a performance in Osaka. The program hopes to find opportunities to bring the production to Thailand and Singapore in the future.

Outcomes
In 2003, “INK” was produced as result of the artist-in-residence program. The production was further refined to attain higher quality for the performances in Melbourne and Osaka in 2006.
A documentary work based on the interviews of senior residents in the community was produced during the “dB-International Works 2005 - Garden of Eros.” By incorporating the method of oral history, this project opened up the theater to the senior residents in the local community.
