History

The International Steel Sculpture Symposium YAHATA '87 was held in Yahatahigashi-ku  in 1987 and 1993. It was initially organized by an executive committee, consisting of local residents.
From 1989, seven Contemporary Art Summer Seminars in Kitakyushu were held, inviting artists and art professionals around the world to teach young people aspiring to develop their careers as an artist. It invited 36 lecturers and attracted 297 participants from all over Japan, and also drew attention among art professionals in Japan and overseas.
In October 1996, Center for Contemporary Art CCA Kitakyushu was established.

In May 1997, with the cooperation with the local commercial bodies and Kitakyushu City, Center for Contemporary Art CCA Kitakyushu, a non-profit organization was established  to run the first public educational and research institute in Japan dedicated to contemporary art.

Program Objectives
  • To nurture creative talent and conduct research in the field of contemporary art,  popularize contemporary art and develop the local art and culture.
  • To train young artists so that they become active at international level, and to invite international artists and to develop the local culture through artists’ creative activities.
Program Activities
  • Research Program
    A study and research program at postgraduate level for young contemporary artists and researchers in their 20s to 30s. World-renowned contemporary artists are invited as professors and lecturers for these courses. Professors stay in Kitakyushu for approximately one month as instructors, hold intensive seminars, special lectures, and public seminars. Lecturers stay in Kitakyushu for a short period as instructors.
  • Information service
    Publications and resources on contemporary art are collected and archived for public access.
  • Community programs
    Public programs such as exhibitions, open seminars, and kids workshops are held for the local residents.

Application information is available at Center for Contemporary Art CCA Kitakyushu from June onwards every year.
Selection Process
  • Initial selection is made by the international committee, based on the information included in the submitted application forms and materials.
  • Interviews are held for the final selection.
Achievements and
Outcomes
To date, approximately 153 artists from Japan and overseas has completed the study and research program. Many of them are currently taking an active role in arts worldwide.
