Facility Description

Located in an old quiet residential area, near mountains and rivers. There are a few historical sites interspersed in the area.
The building, which was former Togura Town Hall building was renovated and turned into a two-storey building, with a studio and a management office on the first floor and residential spaces for artists on the second floor.
Lot size: 401sq. m.; Total floor space: 247 sq. m.
Studio: 1 studio for share by  3 artists (approximately 80 sq. m.) . Equipments for copperplate prints, lithographs, and woodblock prints available for use.

Accommodation: 4 resident units (approximately 10 sq. m. each) equipped with basic necessities, including a bed, a desk, and a closet. Kitchen, dining room, and bathroom are available for share.
Access

By train:

Take the JR Chuo Line and the Itsukaichi Line westbound from central Tokyo, and get off at “Musashi Itsukaichi” station and take a bus (approximately 10 minutes).
History The artist-in-residence program was initiated as part of TAMA Life 21, an event held in 1993 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tama area joining Tokyo.

Program Objectives

The purpose of this program is to discover young artists / printmakers who are active throughout the world and offer them a growing experience and an opportunity to create artwork in a communal atmosphere with other artists from different backgrounds.
The program aims to further the friendship and understanding of art and different cultures between the artists and local communities through artworks and exchanges.

Program Activities

Artist-in-residence program
Planning and selection of the current year by ASIOC takes place between April and June.
Workshops and other exchange programs with local elementary schools are carried out during the residency period.

An exhibition is held in late November. Artists are expected to donate artworks they produced during their residency to Akiruno City.

Outcomes

27 Japanese artists and 16 foreign artists have taken residency.
14 Art Studio Itsukaichi Print Exhibitions have been held at Art Studio Itsukaichi
3 exhibitions of donated artworks have been held at Akiruno Lupia.
Artworks are on display at public facilities in the city.

As result, the program is gaining recognition both in Japan and overseas.
