Facility Description

Kyoto Art Center is housed in a historic and cultural building which used to be Meirin Elementary School. Founded in 1869 and closed in 1993, the original school building was constructed by donations from local residents.
Lot size: 4,387 sq. m.; floor space in total: 5,209 sq. m.

  • West building: Ferroconcrete, 2 floors and a basement
  • North building: Ferroconcrete, 3 floors
  • South building: Ferroconcrete, 3 floors (partially 4 floors)
These buildings house the following facilities:
  • 12 artist studios
  • Free space
  • Auditorium for theatrical performances and exhibitions
  • 2 galleries (for monthly exhibitions)
  • Library (4,000 books on Kyoto and arts; approximately 400 visual materials; flyers/posters on art events)

History The Kyoto Art Center was conceived as part of the Kyoto City’s 1996 policy for promoting arts and culture, which outlined plans, including establishing an art center to encourage artistic and cultural exchange.

Program Objectives Kyoto Art Center aims to facilitate artists to meet and inspire one another, and, also, provide the local residents with opportunities to appreciate the arts. The artist-in-residence program is designed to enable young artists and researchers to explore innovative expressions in a cross-cultural environment. It provides artists with support for residency, production, and presentation.
Program Activities Artist-in-residence program that supports artistic production and research, and community programs for local residents, such as lectures, open studios, and workshops.
