Japanese American Leadership Symposium

100 years have passed since emigrants from Fukuoka first stepped onto American soil. Although many experienced hardships during difficult times in U.S.-Japan relations, by “reconnecting” with the Japanese, some Japanese Americans demonstrate enthusiasm in playing a crucial role in bridging Japan and the U.S. At this symposium, three Japanese Americans including the third generation with family roots in Fukuoka will participate as panelists and share their personal and family stories. The coordinators, Ms. Hirano and Professor Watanabe will lead the symposium, inviting the audience to participate in lively discussions. We look forward to having many participants in this symposium.

This symposium is held as part of the “Japanese American Leadership Delegation Program”. This year, the Delegation consisting of 13 Japanese American leaders from various professional fields from 10 cities throughout the U.S., travel to Tokyo, Kyoto and Fukuoka, from March 1 to March 9, 2008. This is the eighth Delegation to Japan. The trip’s itinerary also includes meetings in Tokyo with governmental, political and business leaders, and visits in Kyoto to a cultural master and cultural and historic sites.

This program has been sponsored and organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Japan Foundation CGP in cooperation with the Japanese American National Museum, with a view to promoting mutual understanding between Japanese American community and Japan and strengthening long-term Japan –U.S. relations. The leaders who have participated in the JALD program, gain a deeper understanding of contemporary Japanese society and upon their return, are committed to future efforts to build linkages between the Japanese American community and Japan.
