Message from Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
for the 22nd Meeting of the United States - Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON)

(Provisional Translation)

I wish to extend my warmest greetings to you on this occasion of the Twenty-second U.S.?Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON) in Montana.

When I visited the United States and held talks with President George W. Bush at the end of last month, we reconfirmed our thinking on the Japan-U.S. global alliance and agreed that the Japan-U.S. partnership stands as one of the most accomplished bilateral relationships in history. We also released a joint statement titled “The Japan-U.S. Alliance of the New Century” on global cooperation for the twenty-first century. This statement touches upon the deep and growing ties between the Japanese and American people.

At such a time, it is deeply gratifying to have this conference take place in the home state of the late Senator Mike Mansfield, former Ambassador to Japan, who frequently commented that “the U.S.-Japan relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, bar none.”

I understand that at this conference, you will examine various cultural and educational issues from a broad perspective and engage in a wide-ranging discussion on such matters as the role of CULCON in our future bilateral relations.

This will be the third of the joint conferences to take place during my term in office. I sincerely hope that by means of an active exchange of opinions, you, who are leaders in your respective fields in Japan and the United States, will provide great new insights in advancing measures to further deepen mutual understanding and exchange between our two countries.
July 24, 2006
Junichiro Koizumi
Prime Minister of Japan
