Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (March 2016)

This month’s book to be displayed is “Voyage of His Majesty’s ship Alceste, along the coast of Corea, to the island of Lewchew; with an account of her subsequent shipwreck,” published in London in 1818.

The author, John M’Leod (1777?-1820), is a surgeon who was aboard the escort ship Alceste that transported a mission sent by Britain to the court of China’s Qing Dynasty in 1816 for trade negotiations. This book records the exchanges transcending cultural and language boundaries that took place between the delegation and the people of Ryukyu, where the ship made a port call, together with praise the gracious and friendly people of Ryukyu.
