Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (December 2015)

This month, we are displaying “Le Japon illustré,” which was published in Paris in 1870.

Its author, Aimé Humbert (1819-1900), President of Union Horlogère (Switzerland), arrived in Japan in 1863 leading a group of delegates for concluding a treaty of amity and trade. Along with records of his observations and thoughts, the book, consisting of two volumes, contains more than 450 illustrations introducing Japanese culture, including townscapes, the lives of commoners, and traditional events.
