  • JFIC Library received Award for Organizations of Distinguished Services 2012 by Japan Special Libraries Association.

The annual general meeting and presentation ceremony of the Japan Special Libraries Association were held at the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry on June 19, 2012. On the occasion, the JFIC Library received Award for Organizations of Distinguished Services 2012 since its contribution to the promotion of Japanese culture as an information center for international cultural exchanges is highly evaluated.

A library was founded at the headquarters of the Japan Foundation in 1972, the same year of the Japan Foundation’s establishment. Since then, it has been collecting materials of Japanese studies written in foreign languages and providing services for researchers, foreign students and Japanese-language learners inside and outside Japan. In addition to the activities, the library, newly launched as the JFIC Library, started its services to offer information on international cultural exchanges and introduce the programs of the Japan Foundation when it was relaunched as an independent administrative institution under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2003. The JFIC Library also gives administrative support to the JF libraries of 21 overseas offices.

The Japan Special Libraries Association consists of approximately 420 institutions such as authorities, local assemblies and the libraries and information centers of private organizations.

This month’s book to be displayed is “Rerum a Societate Iesu in oriente gestarum ad annum usque” which was published in Latin in 1571.

The book consists of letters written by Jesuit missionaries during the period from 1549 to 1564 when they had engaged in missionary work in Japan. The letters were originally written in Portuguese, and thereafter translated into Latin by a young missionary G.P. Maffei.
The book is a profoundly valuable material as it is considered the first “official” record reported from Japan.
Published in 1571, the book is the oldest among our rare book collection at the JFIC Library.
