• Featured display for December
  

  
  The theme for December is “MANGA” and “ANIME”.
  
  Japan’s world-famous culture “MANGA” and “ANIME” will be featured. JFIC Library has an extensive collection of Manga and Anime books written in foreign languages, ranging from Hokusai to Hayao Miyazaki.
  We are displaying some of them as a part of our numerous collections.

• Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection”
  
  

  This month’s book to be displayed is “Wahrhaftige Beschreibungen zweyer mächtigen Königreiche, Jappan und Siam” [German version] (A true description of the mighty kingdoms of Japan & Siam) published in Nuremberg in 1663. The author of this book, a French Dutch François Caron had stayed in Japan as an employee of the Dutch East India Company for more than 20 years spanning from 1619 to 1641.

  
  Caron as the deputy Capitan of the Dutch Trading House, Hirado was asked questions on the realities of Japan in 1636 by Director-General at Batavia of the time; therefore, this book was written in the form of questions and answers.

  
  Caron with high-level Japanese language skills was conversant with the Japanese manners due to his long stay in Japan, which has made this book remarkable as the introduction book on Japan by the Dutch. The original Dutch version was placed in the end of the company history book of the Dutch East India Company in 1645.

• Featured display for November
  
  The theme for November is “Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)”
  
  This month we display books on Japanese-language study related to JLPT which will be held on Dec. 4th, 2011. The books are helpful not only for the preparation for JLPT but also for those who want to study Japanese. You may find books written in your own language, which will give you further help for your understanding. Some of the books are available for loan.
  
  Display period : Nov. 7 (Mon.) to 18 (Fri.)

 

 

• Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection”
  

  This month’s book to be displayed is “Vita del P. Carlo Spinola della Compagnia di Giesù, morto per la santa fede nel Giappone“ published in Rome in 1629. Carlo Spinola (1564-1622) is an Italian Jesuit missionary executed at the time of wide-scale Christian persecutions called the great martyrdom in 1622. This book was written to describe the life of Carlo Spinola by Fabio Ambrosio Spinola, who was a cousin of Carlo Spinola.

• Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection”
  

  This month's book to be displayed is Voyage de C. P. Thunberg, au Japon (Published in 1796) [French version] written by a renowned Swedish botanist, Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828).
  C. P. Thunberg is widely recognized as a botanist overseas while he is called
  "Three scholars in Dejima*" along with Engelbert Kaempfer and Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold in Japan. Voyage de C. P. Thunberg, au Japon and other travel books are written based on his experience and observation during his stay in Japan as a doctor for Dutch East India Company spanning from 1775 to 1776.

  
  

  *Three scholars in Dejima : This refers to three scholars who visited Dejima, Nagasaki to study natural history during the Edo period. Trade only with the Netherlands was admitted at the time of Japan due to the policy of seclusion, however, Thunberg was a Swedish and the other two were German.

• Featured display for October
  
  Materials related to the Japan Foundation Awards Recipients for 2011 are to be displayed in October.
  
  Every year since 1973, the Japan Foundation has honored individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to international cultural exchange between Japan and other countries by presenting them with the Japan Foundation Awards. This year’s awardees have been selected as follows.
  
  ◆Japan Foundation Award for Arts and Culture
  TAMBUCO Percussion Ensemble [Mexico]
  ◆Japan Foundation Award for Japanese Language
  Department of Japanese and Japanese Literature, Faculty of Arts, Cairo University [Egypt]
  ◆Japan Foundation Award for Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange
  Augustin Berque Retired Professor, School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences [France]
  
  The materials are to be displayed in the JFIC Library from October 3 (Mon.) to 14 (Fri.).

• Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection”
  
  This month’s book to be displayed is “Dell’historia della Compagnia di Giesv” by Daniello Bartoli (1608-1685) which was published in Roma.
  
  Daniello Bartoli, a renowned scholar of literature and history in the 17th century, edited this book series based on reports of missionary activities sent to the headquarters of the Society of Jesus in Rome from its missionary organizations across Asia. Among the book series, the first edition of volume 1 "Asia" (published in 1653) and volume 2 "Japan" (in 1660) held by the JFIC library are displayed.
  Missionary activities conducted by Francis Xavier (1506-1552) throughout the East are described in "Asia", while the tragic history of Christianity during the period (1570-1640) from Nobunaga Oda to the third shogun, Iemitsu Tokugawa is described in "Japan" .
  
  Display term: Sep. 5 (Mon.) to 9 (Fri.), 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

• Featured display for September
  
  The theme for September is “Venice Biennale”.
  
  “Venice Biennale”, the world’s oldest international art exhibition, has been taking place in Italy. The Japan Foundation has so far hosted the Japan Pavilion, and this year, it holds “TABAIMO: teleco-soup” directed by Yuka Uematsu, the commissioner of Japan Pavilion at the 54th Exhibition.
  
  Catalogs of artists who participated in the Japan Pavilion from the 37th Biennale “Kishin Sinoyama” to the 53rd Biennale “Miwa Yanagi” will be displayed. We hope you enjoy those catalogs.
  
  The catalogs are to be displayed from September 5 (Mon.) to 16 (Fri.).
  
  The September issue of “Wochi Kochi Magazine” features “Venice Biennale” and “Yokohama Triennale”.

• From our rare book collection
  
  This month’s book to be displayed is “Atlas Japannensis (English version)” by Arnoldus Montanus (1625?-1683) which was published in London in 1670. Dutch Missionary Montanus wrote this book to introduce Japan at the earliest stage in Japanese history based on reports by Western missionaries. Many of the illustrations are chalcography drawn with imagination, which present “Mystic Japan”.
  
  Display term: August 8 (Mon.) to 12 (Fri.), 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

• Featured display for August
  
  The theme for August is “Yokohama Triennale”
  

  
  “Yokohama Triennale”, Japan’s largest international contemporary art exhibition to be held once every three years will be held for the forth time from Aug. 6 - Nov. 8. How about visiting this year’s venue after having a look at the past catalogues or reports?
  (The Japan Foundation hosted the first to third “Yokohama Triennale”, and will participate in the event as a special supporter this year.)

  
  The books are displayed in the Library from August 1st. (Mon.) through 12th. (Fri.)

• This month's book from JFIC Library collection
  JFIC Library selects a book for the month from its valuable collection to be displayed and introduced.
  
  The memorable first display is “Illustrations of Japan” written by Isaac Titsingh (1745-1812) and published in London in 1822. Titsingh studied Japanese society and manners at that time while he was working for Dutch East India Company in Dejima, Nagasaki in the middle Edo period, and thereafter, he wrote a great book of “Illustrations of Japan”. Please also enjoy its precise and beautiful illustrations.
  
  Display term: Julyl 11 (Mon.) to 15 (Fri.), 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  Venue: JFIC Library 1st floor

 

• Featured display for July
  
  The JFIC library selects a theme from features of “Wochi Kochi Magazine” or events organized by the Japan Foundation every month, and in accordance with the theme, related books are displayed at the JFIC library.
  
  The theme for July is “Japanese Design”
  
  Foreign books to introduce excellent Japanese design are displayed. If you are interested in some books, you may enjoy reading them at the JFIC library, or check them out. Please feel free to visit our library!
