6 items of the Library’s rare collection are now exhibited in "Galle and Japonisme" held at the Suntory Museum, Tokyo, March 20 through May 11, 2008.


A DVD version of the journal "Kokusai Bunka" is now available in the Library  

The Library has completed to digitalize 219 issues of the journal "Kokusai Bunka", edited and published by the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai from 1939 to 1972. Now its DVD is available for use in the Library. The table of contents for each issue is planned to be posted on the Library website in excel format.

Notice: Temporary Closure of the JFIC Library 

Due to a relocation, JFIC Library will be closed from March 20, 2008 through July 21, 2008. Accordingly, the library's loan service will stop as of March 12, 2008. 
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the temporary termination of our services and ask for your cooperation and understanding in advance. Thank you.

The JFIC library is now exhibiting some rare books of our collection, such as " Relacion del sucesso que tuvo nuestra Santa Fe en los reynos del Iapon, desde el ano de seyscientos y doze hasta el de seyscientos y quinze, Imperando Cubosama(1617)", "Bernhardi Vareni Med. D. Descriptio regni Japoniae et Siam(1673)" and so on. We hold about 6,500 rare books, which were inherited from the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai, the predecessor of the Japan Foundation.

An Announcement for the Library Orientation
We will hold a JFIC Library Orientation for those interested in our resources. Exhibition of the pictorial "Translations of "Manyoshu" in several languages"
JFIC Library is now exhibiting translations of "Manyoshu" in several languages, featuring the translation of the work into English by Hideo Levy, the recipient of "The Japan Foundation Special Prizes" 2007.

KBS Films
KBS Films were produced during 1930 to 1950 by Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (founded in 1934), in order to introduce Japanese culture and society to overseas audience. The films, originally made in 16 mm are now converted to DVD and are available for use at the JFIC Library AV Corner.

The JFIC Library has started to provide electronic journals.
18 titles of English journals subscribed in print can be accessed online within the Library as well.

The JFIC library is now exhibiting publications for the recipients of "The Japan Foundation Award" and "The Japan Foundation Special Prizes" 2007, which are presented each year to recognize those who have made outstanding achivements in the field of international cultural exchange. We display Japanese Nō Dramas by Royall Tyler, the recipient of "The Japan Foundation Award", Hitomaro and the Birth of Japanese Lyricism by Ian Hideo Levy, the recipient of "The Japan Foundation Special Prizes", and The Rising Sun and the Turkish Crescent by Ayşe Selçuk Esenbel, the recipient of "The Japan Foundation Special Prizes", and so on.

The "Union List of Periodicals" has been removed from the library website. In is place, holding data on periodicals is now available on the library's online catalogue. To search for periodicals in our collection, please use the "JF-Libraries Multi-Catalogue Search" and each library's "Online Catalogue".

Exhibition of the pictorial "English-Japanese、Japanese-English dictionaries published from Edo to Meiji period"
The JFIC library is now exhibiting English-Japanese、Japanese-English dictionaries published from Edo to Meiji period. The display features: the first edition of "An English and Japanese,and Japanese and English Vocabulary" (1830) compiled by an English missionary, W.H Medhurst, the oldest language dictionary in Japan ; the first edition of "An Unabridged Japanese-English Dictionary" (1896) compiled by F. Brinkley; the first edition of "A Dictionary of the English, Chinese and Japanese Languages with the Japanese Pronunciation" (1879) by Sen Tsuda, and so on.

Exhibition of the pictorial "The Book of Crepe Paper (Chirimenbon)"
We are continuing to exhibit some fairy tales from our Crepe Paper (Chirimenbonn) collection in the JFIC Library.
The book of Crepe Paper is printed from stunningly colorful woodblock prints with movable type and bounded in Japanese style. The Library holds about 90 titles as the book of Crape Paper.

Exhibition of the pictorial "Pocket Guide to Japan"
The JFIC library is now exhibiting guidebooks on Japan for foreign tourists published from Meiji to early Showa period. The display features: Pocket Guide to Japan published before 1945 by the Board of Tourist Industry, Japanese Government Railways in English, French, German, Portuguese, and Esperanto version; travel guidebooks in Meiji period; and guidebooks to famous sightseeing places in Japan. Please enjoy those beautiful illustrations.
