Library Small Exhibition
The Library is holding a small theme exhibition from its collection.
The series entitled “Books of Photography in the Meiji Period” started in October 2010, and the final period of the series to be held in January 2011 is called “Occupations and Artisans”.
Exhibited are photographs that show the lives of people in the Meiji Period including workers in the sericulture industry that flourished in Japan in that period, ivory carving craftsmen, and Daikagura (the lion dance) performers.

Library Small Exhibition
The Library is holding a small theme exhibition from its collection.
The series entitled “Books of Photography in the Meiji Period” started in October, and
the third period of the series to be held in December is called “Vehicles”.
Photographs to be exhibited are those of means of transportations survived from Edo period, such as palanquins, jinrikisha (rickshaws), and boats, as well as new means of transportations imported from overseas to the cities in Meiji period, such as bicycles, automobiles, steam trains, and streetcars.

The Library is holding a small theme exhibition from its collection.
The series entitled “Books of Photography in the Meiji Period” started in October, and
the second period of the series to be held in November is called “Shops”.
Exhibited photographs include carefully hand-tinted photographs of a fruit shop and a
toy shop, and a photograph of a shoe store with products piled up to the ceiling.

Library Small Exhibition
The Library is holding a small theme exhibition from the collection.
The second series “Books of Photography in the Meiji Period” will start in October.
Photography was brought from Western Europe to Japan in
1850s. From the last days of Tokugawa Shogunate to the early Meiji
Period (1870s), photography came into the lives of ordinary Japanese
people. From its collection, the Library presents books of photography
with English captions published in the Meiji Period.
The first period of the exhibition focuses on photographs of Sumo.
Photographs taken by foreigners of Sumo wrestlers and “Kokugikan”, the hall of sumo established in 1909, will be exhibited.

Library Small Exhibition
The Library is holding a small theme exhibition from its collection.
The small exhibition, “Guidebooks on Japan in the Meiji and Taisho Periods,“ which started in June, will hold its fourth and final exhibition, “Advertisements in Guidebooks“ in September. Advertisements for hotels and souvenirs in guidebooks will be displayed.
The Library will hold more small exhibitions in the future. Please take a look at them when you visit the Library.

The small exhibition, “Guidebooks on Japan in the Meiji and Taisho Periods,“which started in June, will hold its third exhibition, “Ships and Railroads were the Ways to Travel“ in August. Guidebooks published by passenger boat companies and railroad companies, which provided main means to travel in those days, will be displayed.

Library Small Exhibition
The Library will have a small theme exhibition from the collection.
The first theme will be “Guidebooks on Japan in the Meiji and Taisho
Periods.” It
will be exhibited from June to September.
Guidebooks have been published for tourists from abroad since Japan was opened
to foreign countries. We will display some of these rare books from the period.
