Dear Readers:
On July 5 Sohei Yoshino, executive vice president of the Japan
Foundation, was conferred the title of Grande Ufficiale by the
Italian Republic, and an award ceremony took place at the Embassy of
Italy in Tokyo.
The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, instituted in 1951, is
awarded by the president to individuals in Italy and overseas for
distinguished services in various fields.
Executive Vice President Yoshino joined the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai,
the predecessor of the Japan Foundation, in 1964. Assigned from 1972
to 1976 to the Japan Cultural Institute in Rome, one of our overseas
offices, he became its director, as well as minister at the Embassy
of Japan in Italy, from 2000 to 2002. He has also served as managing-
director of the Financial and Accounting Department and managing-
director of the Arts Department, among other posts. He was appointed
vice president in 2002.

(1) WONDERBUS Japan Photo Exhibition 7/31-9/1 Tokyo
The Japan Foundation Information Center is exhibiting photo archives
of the WONDERBUS Japan tour in Australia at its JFIC Lounge space.
Visitors can follow the tour through images of encounters of
Australians with Japanese culture.
Admission is free. The JFIC Lounge is located on the 20th floor of
the Japan Foundation Headquarters in Akasaka, Tokyo.

(2) Abe Brown-Bag Lunch 8/8 Tokyo
The Japan Foundation will host a brown-bag seminar on "Public Airwaves,
Public Interest? Digital Television Policy in Japan, Britain and the
US" by Prof. Henry Laurence, associate professor of government and
politics at Bowdoin College and a 1999 Abe Fellow, at its headquarters
in Akasaka, Tokyo. The session will be held in English.
Admission is free but booking is required by August 7.

JFIC Library News: July, 2006
The JFIC Library at the headquarters will be closed on August 19,
although it is the third Saturday.

(4) Fragments/Chiangmai by Satoko Kobayashi 8/11-30 Bangkok
The Japan Foundation, Bangkok will present an exhibition of
contemporary art by Satoko Kobayashi at the Japan Foundation Art
Space in Bangkok. "Fragments/Chiangmai" is a compilation of
Kobayashi's impressions of her stay in the northern town of Chiangmai,
Thailand.

(5) Japanese Film Screenings 8/5, 19 Kuala Lumpur
The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur will host the screenings of two
Japanese films at the Mini Auditorium of the Malaysia Tourism Centre
(formerly known as MATIC): "Beijing Watermelon" (Pekin teki Suika)
directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi on August 5, and "Summer Holiday
Everyday" (Mainichi ga Natsuyasumi) directed by Shusuke Kaneko
on August 19.

(6) Demonstration of Traditional Martial Arts in Asia 8/14-21
The Japan Foundation will jointly dispatch eight masters of the
traditional Japanese martial art to Malaysia, Brunei, and the
Philippines.
The Philippines performance is designated as a program of
"Fifty Years of the Philippines-Japan Friendship."

(7) "Nitaboh" Comes to Bangkok! Film Screening in August
The Japan Foundation, Bangkok will present Japanese film screenings
in August. The series of screenings will include award-winning
"Nitaboh: The Founder of Tsugaru Shamisen," "Nodo-Jiman" and
"Lady Camilla" (Tsubaki-Hime).

(9) TSUGARU--Soul & Beat of Japan 8/18 Sydney, 8/20 Canberra,
8/25 Brisbane
As part of the Japan-Australia Year of Exchange, the Japan Foundation,
Sydney will present performances of Tsugaru shamisen in three
Australian cities in August.
Michihiro Sato and his son Michiyoshi Sato are among the best players
of the Tsugaru shamisen. They will perform with Shozan Tanabe on
shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute), Sachiko Kaiho on koto (Japanese
harp), and Masaki Yoshimi on tabla.

(10) Japanese Culture Course III: Butoh 8/2-16 Sao Paulo
The third session of the Japanese Culture Course at the Japan
Foundation, Sao Paulo will feature artist Nourit Masson-Sekine, who
will introduce the history and current trends of the Japanese
contemporary dance "butoh."

(11) Symposium on Sao Paulo Biennale 8/4-5 Sao Paulo
The Japan Foundation, Sao Paulo will host a seminar on "Collective
Life: Fourth International Seminar of the 27th Sao Paulo Biennale"
at its office.
Among the speakers invited by the curator-general of the 27th Biennale,
Mr. Lisette Lagnado, is Prof. Yuko Hasegawa of Tama Art University,
who was the commissioner of the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.

(12) Flute Recital 8/8-9 Sao Paulo and Florianopolis
The Japan Foundation, Sao Paulo will host evenings of recitals by
Celina Charlier on flute. Charlier will perform with cellist Fabio
Pellegatti in Sao Paulo on August 8 and with pianist Regis Gomide in
Florianopolis on August 9.

(13) Poet Gozo Yoshimasu to Be Dispatched to Four Cities in Brazil
8/9-20
The Japan Foundation will dispatch the poet Gozo Yoshimasu and
Marilya Corbot, an artist and performer as well as Yoshimasu's wife,
to Paraty, San Paolo, Brasilia, and Compinas in Brazil.
In Paraty, Yoshimasu and Corbot will perform readings of Yoshimasu's
poems on the tent stage at the International Literary Festival of
Paraty. They will also hold some seminars and reading performances in
three other cities, sometimes along with a Japanese film screening.

(14) Twelfth Issue of Wochi Kochi Published
The twelfth issue of "Wochi Kochi," the Japan Foundation's bimonthly
magazine, is now out. The topic of the current issue is "How the world
is reading Haruki Murakami." The special feature is based on the Japan
Foundation's symposium on Murakami and includes essays by Inuhiko
Yomota, Roland Kelts, and Issey Ogata, among others. It also carries
an article on the making of the seminar written by a JF program
officer.
