The Asia Leadership Fellow Program 2011 Call for Applications
Deadline: Monday, December 20, 2010
The Asia Leadership Fellow Program (ALFP) seeks to create a close,
personal and professional network of public intellectuals in Asia,
deeply rooted in and committed to civil society beyond their own
cultural, disciplinary and geopolitical backgrounds.
The Fellows from diverse backgrounds take part in such programs as
workshops, seminars with resource persons, field trips, a retreat with
Japanese and non-Japanese scholars and NGO leaders, and a public
symposium.
Period: September 12 to November 11, 2011
Place: Japan
Theme: "Asia in Dialogue: Visions and Actions for a Humane Society"

(2) TRANS-CRIOLLA Special Concert (11/10 Tokyo)
The Japan Foundation hosted a concert tour in three South American
countries (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile) featuring Mio Matsuda, a noted
singer, percussionist Tomohiro Yahiro, and Uruguayan master keyboardist
Hugo Fattoruso in August 2010.
This unique Latin musician trio "TRANS-CRIOLLA" will be on one night
only stage in Tokyo. Guest performers are Rey Tambor, the leading
Candombe (the Afro-Uruguayan rhythm) group from Uruguay, and Francesca
Ancarola, nationally acclaimed Neuva Cancion singer from Chile.
Date: November 10 at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00 p.m.)
Venue: Hakuju Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo
Fee: 3,500 yen for unreserved seats; 3,000 yen for advanced tickets

(3) An Evening of Noh and Kyogen: Tickets Now Available (12/14 Kyoto)
The Japan Foundation Kyoto Office has been organizing "An Evening of
Noh and Kyogen" since 1974 to provide foreigners with an opportunity
to experience Japanese traditional culture.
With the cooperation of the Shigeyama family of Kyogen as well as the
Katayama and Kongo families of Noh, this year's stage will be on
December 14 at Kyoto Kanze Kaikan.

A Kyogen play "Suo Otoshi" (The Dropped Gift)
Featuring: Sengoro Shigeyama
A Noh play "Funa-Benkei" (Benkei in The Boat)
Featuring: Kiyoshi Katayama

(4) Chihiro Iwasaki Picture Book Exhibition, Lecture & Workshop
(10/29-11/20 Beijing)
The Japan Foundation, Beijing and Chihiro Art Museum co-organize
a special exhibition of major works by Chihiro Iwasaki, Japanese
artist renowned for her charming paintings and illustrations of
flowers and children. Picture books by leading Japanese artists will
also be exhibited to show the development of contemporary picture
books in Japan.

(5) Nihon Buyo Lecture and Demonstration by Minosuke Nishikawa
(11/2-11/5 Kuala Lumpur, Singapore)
The Japan Foundation hosts a special lecture and demonstration of Nihon
Buyo (traditional Japanese dance) in Malaysia and Singapore by Minosuke
Nishikawa, who will introduce the essence of Nihon Buyo through a
lecture and the authentic performances with Seira Hanayagi.

Dairakudakan, Japan's leading butoh (dance) group led by Akaji Maro.

(8) Artist Talk and Video Screening by Koki Tanaka (11/2 Toronto)
The Japan Foundation, Toronto hosts an artist talk with Mr. Koki
Tanaka on November 2. Mr. Tanaka is a multimedia installation artist
whose work is currently on display at the Japan Foundation, Toronto as
part of the exhibition "Winter Garden: The Exploration of the Micropop
Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art".

(9) Hono-O-Daiko Performances (10/26-10/27 Madrid)
The Japan Foundation, Madrid, in collaboration with the Circulo de
Bellas Artes (CBA), hosts two performances by the female taiko group
Hono-O-Daiko. Four women play O-Daiko (big Japanese drums) with the
smooth expression and the traditional rhythms from the region of
Ishikawa, their base of activity.

(10) 23rd Moscow International Japanese Speech Competition of Students
(10/30 Moscow)
The Japanese Culture Department "Japan Foundation" of the All-Russia
State Library for Foreign Literature, the Association of Japanese
Language Teachers of CIS countries, and the Embassy of Japan in Russia
co-organize the Japanese speech competition with the participation of
students from different regions of Russia, CIS and the Caucasus.

(11) Unit Asia Jazz Concert and Workshop (11/1-11/2 Cairo)
The Japan Foundation, Cairo hosts concerts by "Unit Asia", a perfect
combination of five top Asian Jazz players from Japan, Thai and Malaya.
Following their huge success in Southeast Asia tour in 2008, they will
bring the audience in Egypt their warm energy and creativity.

(12) Introduction to Shakuhachi and Mini-concert (11/3-11/4 Paris)
The Japan Cultural Institute in Paris (Maison de la culture du Japon
a Paris) hosts introductory workshops and mini-concert of shakuhachi,
Japanese bamboo flute. The lecturer is Yozan Ajima who studied the
shakuhachi with the National Living Treasure Hozan Yamamoto and is
currently a member of the Ensemble Hozan Yamamoto.

(13) Workshop "Furoshiki - The Japanese Way of Wrapping" (11/2 London)
The Japan Foundation, London hosts a workshop by furoshiki expert
Hiroaki Koyama. He will talk briefly about the history and culture of
the cloth and demonstrate the art of wrapping, including how the cloth
can be used in everyday life.

(14) Long Night of Museums of Cologne (11/6 Cologne)
The Japan Cultural Institute in Cologne participates in the annual
event "Long Night of Museums of Cologne" on November 6.
Entitled "Silent Film: DJ", this project combines an old classic
Japanese movie with new vinyl music. DJ sad.sad.calzone will set live
music on three turntables to the short film Gyakuryu (Backward Flow,
1924) starring Tsumasaburo Bando.

(15) Dance Performance by Hiroaki Umeda (11/12-11/13 Paris)
The Japan Cultural Institute in Paris (Maison de la culture du Japon
a Paris) hosts performances by Hiroaki Umeda, choreographer, performer,
composer and video artist. The performance consists of his solo work
"Haptic" and a hypnotic group piece for three dancers "1. centrifugal"
choreographed by Mr. Umeda.
The performance of November 13 will be followed by a talk session
with Mr. Umeda.
