"Golden Week" holidays are just over in Japan. Now it is getting
hotter and hotter toward summer. The Japan Foundation will bring
you hot information on arts and cultures this month, too! ** Graphic Works in Early Showa Period - NATORI Younosuke, KIMURA Ihee and DOMON Ken (5/19-6/29 Tokyo) ** The Japan Foundation Information Center Library (JFIC Library) will
display the magazines and books of photography as well as illustrated books in the early Showa Period mainly from the library collection. Graphic design of modern Japan will be found in photographic expression, layout design, and printing technique of the time that shows what Japan was in the early 20th century.

(2) JF Original Furoshiki Now Available at JFIC Shop (Tokyo)

The Japan Foundation (JF) held in autumn 2010 the Second International Furoshiki Design Contest for students studying designs in 9 countries overseas: Germany, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, United States, Brazil, Russia, Vietnam and Singapore. Among all 217 submissions, the designs of one winner of Grand Prize (Vietnam) and three of Prize for Excellence (Singapore, United States and Canada) were newly adopted as JF original furoshiki.

(3) Manga Exhibition in Hanoi (5/19-6/16 Hanoi)

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam presents "Manga Realities: Exploring the Art of Japanese Comics Today" in corporation with Embassy of Japan in Vietnam.
This exhibition will focus on 9 distinguished Japanese manga works that have gained attention since 2000. A manga reading room will be set up at the museum for the visitors' reference.

(4) Ikebana Classes Opening Ceremony (5/20 Jakarta)

The Japan Foundation, Jakarta organizes Ikebana (flower arrangement) classes every Friday from May 20 in corporation with Ikenobo Indonesia Chapter. The classes are only for Indonesian, but opening ceremony is open to the public.

(5) RAP IN TONDO 2! (5/16-5/21 Manila, 5/22-5/25 Davao)

The Japan Foundation, Manila together with Embassy of France and Goethe-Institute Philippine presents Rap in Tondo 2, a workshop having started in 2010 for local Filipino rap and hip hop artists. The two-week workshop aims to train local Filipino rap and hip-hop artists in teaching the art to young rappers and hip-hoppers promoting rap and hip-hop in the country.
This year's event will feature the following rap and hip-hop artists
from France and Germany: MC Narco aka DJ Joe Kanga (Achille Dipita Toube), DJ Access (Matthias Schnar), THE P.A.T (Ndongmo Tapondjou Patrick Bernard), and MICHEL aka FLY (Michel Andres Figueredo Hernandez); from the Philippines: Shielbert Manuel, Filemon Dionisio, and Restly Perez; and from Japan: OMIYUKI CHANNEL.

(6) The Grand Shrine of Ise: Photographs by Haruo Nakano
(3/15-6/30 Toronto)

The Japan Foundation, Toronto presents an exhibition of Haruo Nakano, the official photographer of the Grand Shrine of Ise.
All photographs are printed on washi, hand-made Japanese paper, and framed using timber from the sacred forest of the Shrine. Along with the delicate but noble photography, the contemporary craftsmanship contributes to this exhibition to deliver the spirit of the holy forest.

(7)Talk by David Pepper: Give Me that Old-Time Washi (6/7 Toronto)

David Pepper has been collecting and studying traditional Japanese artifacts since he bought an old samurai sword in 1958. Washi, the native handmade paper, has been for many centuries an extremely versatile material, and turns up in surprising places as the main or supporting medium for everything from the obvious books and paintings to swords and armour. David will give a slide presentation on the historical use of washi, and promises to bring a number of actual artifacts for display and discussion.

(8) Lecture: Overcoming both Physical and Demographic Tsunamis (5/17 London)

The Japan Foundation, London hosts a lecture of "Overcoming both Physical and Demographic Tsunamis" by Kosuke Motani, Senior Vice President of the Regional Planning Department at the Development Bank of Japan Inc and a Working Group Member for the Reconstruction Design Council of the Cabinet Office. The theme of this lecture will help the audience foresee something of the future, while enhancing their capability to survive in the new era of the global economy.

(9) Iai Demonstration by the School of Mugai (5/21 Paris)

The Japan Cultural Institute in Paris hosts the Iai demonstration, a martial art that requires rapid sword drawing from a scabbard and cuts the opponent in one movement. Among many schools of Iai and Kenjutsu (a martial art that is practiced with unsheathed sword), the School of Mugai founded by Tsuji Gettan (Zen monk) in 1693 stands out particularly. With this demonstration of the School of Mugai, learn a true art of the Samurai!

(11) Contemporary Japanese Film Screening (5/27 Moscow)

The Japan Foundation, Russia organizes the screening of a Japanese film "As always", directed by Satoshi Kenmochi in 1998, which depicts three young people who met each other in their ordinary everyday lives.

(13) Sake Tasting (6/16 Paris)

The Japan Cultural Institute in Paris presents sake tasting and
workshop. Sake plays a central role in the life and culture of Japanese for nearly 2000 years. Sake is now made by about 2,000 sake breweries that offer 10,000 different brands, but very few of them are currently sold in France. After the workshop, you can taste varieties of sake.
