120th Anniversary of Japan-Thailand Diplomatic Relations
The year 2007 marks the 120th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Amity and Commerce between Japan and Siam in 1887. This was the first treaty that the Meiji government concluded with a Southeast Asian country, signaling the start of Japan's modern diplomatic relations with the region.
Commemorating the anniversary, the governments of Japan and Thailand have agreed to designate 2007 as a year for further strengthening bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields, which have a history of many years, and to cooperate toward that end.
