"KITA!!: Japanese Artists Meet Indonesia" is an art event that is designed for the people of Indonesia and Japanese artists to directly communicate, inspire each other and share the joy and fun of expressing and creating.
Now in the 21st century, the boundaries between art and design, high culture and popular culture are gradually becoming blurred, while exchange among different genres is continuously engendering hybrid forms of expression. To add, dramatic developments in transportation facilities, communication methods including the Internet and satellite broadcasting are also bringing change to the form of exhibitions, which until now have primarily been object-based.
"KITA!!: Japanese Artists Meet Indonesia" is held against this sort of backdrop in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Japan.Approximately fifty artists from Japan who are active in a wide array of genres from art, design, manga to culinary art will are partaking in the project.Though these artists work under different titles – contemporary artist, manga artist, video artist, musician, fashion designer, dance performer, food producer – they influence each other as they engage in their respective creative activities.

In this project, the Japanese artists will stay in three cities, Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta, where they will repeat the process of communicating with the people of Indonesia. They will encounter the Indonesian society and culture through their own research, creative output, performances and other activities, which may at times be an experience of surprise, joy or even confusion. We believe that the accumulation of this process is the most important essence of this exhibition. There will be workshops that invite local Indonesian participants to create work together with the artists, as well as work by the artists that will be made with the cooperation of the Indonesian people. These creative outputs, which will be exhibited at venues around the three cities, will signify how "Japanese Artists Meet Indonesia" as well as how "Indonesian People Meet Japan."

KITA!! is the art event seeking for the way of international communication through contemporary art and questioning the reality of Japanese contemporary art today.
The traditional method of the international exhibition has been alive since its invention in the 19th century. In the museums or galleries, the artefacts are presented so that they introduce tradition, history and culture of their own country to the audience. Whereas we live in an era when Google Earth brings a satellite image in high resolution to our desktop within a few seconds by simply searching the address of a location we are seeking for. Through the Internet, we can search for the latest news from all over the world and chat with anyone that we have never met no matter where they live. Thanks to post-colonialism and globalization, biennales and triennales around the globe exhibit at least one or two pieces of contemporary art from most of the countries. Under these situations, what is the possibility of the international exchange by art?
In order to searching for the answer, we have decided to have the Japanese artists stay for a certain period of time in Indonesia and communicate with local curators, artists, students and residents. We expect real international exchange will be realized within each participating artist when he/she practises everyday life – such as eating, talking, sleeping, and making artworks – in Indonesia, a place where language and environment are different from where he/she comes from, and encounters unpredicted reaction from local people there.
How will the Japanese artists interact with Indonesia? How will the soil of Indonesia inspire them? KITA!! will be an exciting documentary of their exploration, discovery, and creation in Indonesia.
