The Japan Foundation FY16 Exhibition Program “Have We Met?”

The economic development of the late 1980s had transformed the socio-cultural
climate of countries in Asia, and the changes were further accelerated
by the global advancement of digital technology in the 1990s. The young
generations in their twenties and thirties, who spent their youths during
the years of high economic growth, share the experiences of watching the
same television and animation programs (anime), reading the same comic
books (manga), listening to the same pop music, and being acquainted with
other common subcultures that are prevalent in Asia. It has been pointed
out in the recent years that in the arts, too, despite the disparate cultural
environments among countries, artists and artworks share a sense of contemporaneous
sensibility.
Furthermore, experimental artistic expressions that extend
beyond the conventional framework of visual arts and the confines of institutions,
cross over various media, including video, film, photograph, architecture,
design, music, performance, and images, are setting a new trend.
At the Japan Foundation, we have attempted to reflect these shifting realities
in Asia through our recent exhibitions, “Under
Construction” (2002)
and “Out the Window” (2003) that showcased the artistic sensibilities
of the young generations, not confined to conventional art historical discourses
and disciplines. In our upcoming exhibition, “Have We Met?”,
we will focus on the arts and culture of Asia.
The exhibition will be planned
and organized by young curators and creators who are involved in activities
that explore the sense of “contemporary” in their local art
scenes with a global perspective.
We hope that this new project will offer us a glimpse into the cutting
edge expressions of contemporary Asia, which reflect the acute sensitivities
of the curators working in collaboration to select artists of their time.
