Born in Shanghai, China in 1954. Obtained BA from Shanghai Normal University, China and Ph.D. in art history from Ohio State University, USA. Contributes books and essays on modern and contemporary Chinese art, and Sino-Japanese artistic exchanges in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including A Century in Crisis: Tradition and Modernity in the Art of Twentieth Century China (co- author, Guggenheim Museum Publications, 1998) and gThe Lure of the West: Impressionism in China?h (2005). Lives in California.
