Bakeretta
BEWARE—DON'T OPEN THE TOILET DOOR!
In commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the restoration
of Japan-Philippines relations, the Japan Foundation will jointly produce
a horror comedy musical, Bakeretta: Beware—Don't
Open the Toilet Door, with the Tanghalang Pilipino theatrical
company in residence at the national Cultural Center of the Philippines.
The production will be on stage in the Philippines from October 20
to 22 and from November 10 to 26.
Bakeretta is a psychological thriller, somewhat in the
tradition of Japanese horror films but with a quirky, musical twist.
The story is set in an amateur theater company in the Philippines.
As the company rehearses a modern ghost (obake) story, The
Ghost in the Toilet, the mounting pressures of the opening
night get entangled with the personal dramas of company actors,
some comedy and some horror.
This
spine-tingling play within a play is directed by an outstanding
Korean-Japanese playwright, Chong Wishing (Yoshinobu Tei), who originally
wrote the story for a Japanese minitheater and has rearranged it
into Bakeretta for the Philippine theater.
Chong is the founder of the theatrical group Shinjuku Ryozanpaku.
He has produced and written many works for the company, including one
that won a Kishida Kunio award. In 1993, he enjoyed nationwide acclaim
for his script of the film Tsuki wa docchi ni deteiru (All
Under the Moon).
