“TWIST and SHOUT” Contemporary Art from Japan
In relation to the Mekong Japan Exchange Year 2009, the Japan Foundation carried out a research on contemporary art in the Mekong region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam) in March. Based on the result of the research, the Japan Foundation will hold an exhibition entitled “TWIST and SHOUT: Contemporary Art from Japan” in Bangkok, Thailand this fall to enhance exchange projects on arts in the region.

Exhibition Concept
Due to the delay in the development of large-scale facilities, contemporary arts in Thailand had been exhibited mainly at relatively small spaces such as artist-run or alternative spaces and university-affiliated galleries until a huge complex “Bangkok Art and Culture Centre” (BACC) opened in July 2008. This 1,000 square-meter facility on three floors of a nine-story building demands exhibition projects that take advantage of the space. For this purpose, cooperation from Japan is increasingly sought after.
This exhibition is an opportunity to show young curators and artists in Thailand how to organize a large-scale exhibition by collaborating in planning and implementing such project. We hope it will result in next collaborative project in the region.
