Saving Your Life With Art:
The Role of Contemporary Art in addressing Socio-political Challenges under "Glocalization" in Asia

The Asia Leadership Fellows Program (ALFP) is now taking place from September 10 to November 9. ALFP is a joint undertaking by the International House of Japan and the Japan Foundation, designed to invite leading public intellectuals in Asia and consolidate their interdisciplinary network beyond geopolitical and socio-cultural boundaries through dialogue/ discussion to cope with global as well as regional challenges faced by civil society in Asia. Academyhills has invited Bina Sarkar Ellias, one of the ALFP fellows, to give a talk on art.

Connected and empowered as the world is today by instant communication and a wealth of information resources, it is ironic that its citizens are increasingly divided by ethnic, religious and cultural differences. With economic globalization and local awareness--so-called "Glocalization," increasingly accelerating in Asia and other parts of the world, what is the role of contemporary art in addressing these socio-political issues? Introducing her work as editor of "Gallerie," Bina Sarkar Ellias will talk on these global as well as regional challenges. In this context, the issues of freedom and censorship and tolerance of the 'other' will be explored as well.
