The Asia Leadership Fellow Program, which annually awards fellowships to selected intellectuals from Asian countries, was initiated in 1996 by the International House of Japan and the Japan Foundation Asia Center. The fellows spend two to six months in Japan for research and exchange activities and for a collaborative work. The program aims at the promotion of mutual understanding and the creation of a close personal network among such intellectuals, as well as with their counterparts in Japan. Such collaboration will be conducive to developing new norms and value-orientations for the future of the region.

The 1998 Fellows have been working on the broad theme of "Development and Culture" during September and October at the International House. In this symposium, the fellows will give their reflections on their intellectual experiences in Japan and comment on their two-month collaborative work. Their discussions include such topics as: the meaning of development and localizing strategies; multiculturalism; globalization, transnational migration; nation-state and transnational capitalism; Asian tradition and modernity; the concepts of identity and difference; and the current crisis in Southeast Asia.

For reservations, please call the International House of Japan Program Department (Tel: 03-3470-3211, Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.). Admission free.
