Initiated in 1996 as a joint undertaking of the International House
of Japan and the Japan Foundation Asia Center, this program is designed
to promote mutual understanding and cooperation and to create a close personal
network among intellectual leaders from the Asian region through extending
fellowships in the form of invitations to visit Japan for up to 3 months
to 5 or 6 selected specialists. During their visit, the fellows participate
in two months of joint research consisting of seminars and workshops on
the comprehensive theme of "Development and Culture" during September and
October, while staying at the International House of Japan. This open symposium
is held for the purpose of providing an opportunity for the fellows to report
on and discuss the results of their two-month period of joint research.
