A Wild Haruki Chase: How the World Is Reading and Translating Murakami (March, 2006)
Outline
The
Japan Foundation will hold a symposium and two workshops focusing on
the novels and their translations of Haruki Murakami, one of the most
popular contemporary novelists in the world.
It is aimed at exploring the secret of this Murakami boom and considering what
is common and different when his novels are read by people of different nations
and of various generations.
Translators and Critics from 16 countries or territories will join together at
the University of Tokyo's Komaba Campus for the two-day symposium to be held
on March 25 and 26.
Tokyo Program will be co-organized by the Japan
Foundation and Mainichi Shinbun, with the cooperation of University
of Tokyo.
Public Symposiums at Sapporo and Kobe are
also
planned on March 29th.
*Please note that the presence of Mr. Haruki Murakami himself is not expected.
