The Japan Foundation hosts “Hogaku Concert Tour in Central American and Caribbean Countries” to take place in five cities of three countries; Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago and Dominican Republic in November 2011.

The special unit, which is led by the duo “OYAMA x NITTA” of Tsugaru Shamisen players Yutaka Oyama and Masahiro Nitta and formed with special members of Shakuhachi player Hiromu Motonaga, Taiko drummer Shuichi Hidano, leading bassist in the Latin music scene Getao Takahashi and Wadaiko drummer from Hokkaido Shinta, will present fantastic performances. The artists will bring to the audience the sound of traditional Tsugaru Shamisen and Shakuhachi, original numbers composed by OYAMA x NITTA and collaboration with the percussionists and bassist during the concert tour.

These Central American and Caribbean countries have their unique style of music rooted in their culture such as salsa, merengue and calypso. Some major artists such as renowned Costa Rica's salsa band Son de Tikizia are scheduled to join the concert tour to challenge new ways of cultural exchange with Central American and Caribbean countries through music, which goes beyond simple unilateral introduction of Japanese culture.
