The Briefing Session on Exhibition:The Group 1965: "We are Boys!" Held on February 10 - Coming back to Japan from Germany and Ukraine!

昭和40年会「We are boys!」展

The Japan Foundation organized the traveling exhibition in Kunsthalle Duesseldorf, Germany (May 21 to July 3, 2011) and Art Arsenal, Kiev (November 1 to 13, 2011) to comprehensively introduce the activities of an artist unit “The Group 1965”, whose members were all born in a year of 1965. The unit consists of artists playing a pivotal role at the contemporary Japanese art scene, such as Makoto Aida, Sumihisa Arima, Oscar Oiwa, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Parco Kinoshita and Hiroyuki Matsukage.
Various kinds of performances by Sumihisa Arima, Hiroyuki Matsukage and Parco Kinoshita were presented, and the wide-scale exhibition by Makoto Aida took place in both venues, which were widely covered by the local media. As the curator for the exhibition Gregor Jansen of Kunsthalle Duesseldorf said, this exhibition had introduced an aspect of contemporary Japanese art scene different from Murakami and Nara.
The briefing session on the exhibition by participating artists and a curator is scheduled to take place on February 10, 2012, which will reveal the whole picture of the exhibition by introducing photos, videos and episodes. All the members of “The Group 1965” will gather in Tokyo to join this briefing session that will be the event held by the group in Japan for the first time in three years. A surprising plan is also prepared, so please visit our JFIC Hall [Sakura] for this event.

The Group 1965

Photo of The Group 1965The Group 1965 is not an artist collective in the conventional sense of the term. It formed more or less by chance, and its members share little other than their Japanese nationality and the fact that they were all born in 1965. Artists participating in this collective individually produce their works in a wide range of arts, photos, music and performance. Though respective artists express in different ways, they share something in common such as generational background, nonsense, humor and performance. The unit members conduct projects in collaboration or publish books like “The Group 1965’s Tokyo Guide”.
