“Yōga: Modern Western Paintings of Japan” Exhibition in Taipei City, Taiwan Explores the 100-year History of Japanese Western Paintings

The Japan Foundation co-organizes the exhibition “Yōga: Modern Western Paintings of Japan” in Taipei City, Taiwan with Museum of National Taipei University of Education, The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, and Japan Art Dealers Association.

This exhibition follows up “The Modern Art in Taiwan–Works by Foreign Students in their Youth (1895–1945)” held at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2014 which presented Taiwanese modern art through artworks by Taiwanese students who had studied at the former Tokyo School of Fine Arts in early 20th century. The “Yōga” exhibition commemorates the 130th anniversary of the Tokyo University of the Arts and the 60th anniversary of the Japan Art Dealers Association.

The “Yōga” exhibition traces the origins and development of Japanese modern western-style paintings as well as the history of exchange among Taiwanese and Japanese modern painters in the course of maturation of modern art in the region. The show consists of 52 oil paintings, 35 watercolor paintings, and special items as six painters’ palettes from a collection of the Kasama Nichido Museum of Art. Artists featured in the exhibition are Japanese plein air painters such as Seiki Kuroda, Takeji Fujishima, and Eisaku Wada who were influenced by European impressionists; Ryuzaburo Umehara, Tetsugoro Yorozu, and Kotaro Migishi who explored fauvism, cubism, and surrealism; and Kinichiro Ishikawa who is known to have laid a foundation for modern art in Taiwan.
