Series: Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake The 1st Symposium: Architecture and Organizational Strength - Industrial Competitiveness in East Asia -

In Japan, the 9.0-magnitute Great East Japan Earthquake occurred in the coastal area of the Pacific Ocean on March 11 with approximately 20-meter high Tsunami that thoroughly destroyed numerous cities on the coast of Sanriku-kaigan in Tohoku region.
The earthquake and Tsunami also seriously damaged the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant, which deprived approximately 20,000 people's lives and forced more than 200,000 people to evacuate from their hometowns. Due to the earthquake and Tsunami, Japan now faces unprecedented difficulties.

The Japan Foundation organizes a symposium "Series: Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake" to discuss common issues shared by Japan, China and other countries such as not only earthquake, urban disaster prevention and energy problems but also corresponding social and economic issues. Prof. Takahiro Fujimoto, a specialist in Toyota Production System, who is conversant with the manufacturing industry in Japan and has deep insights on the supply chain of the manufacturing industry in Japan and Asia, will hold a commemorative lecture for the first symposium.
Following the symposium, discussion session is scheduled to be held by Japanese and Chinese specialists.

Parts manufacturers in Tohoku were seriously damaged due to the earthquake, which has resulted in that the production capability at overseas factories of automobile manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan has been considerably lowered. This symposium will explore how Toyota Production System will change in the future based on the experience of the earthquake and how Japan's manufacturing industry and its supply chain will alter influenced by appreciation of the yen.
