1. What impressed you most in this experience of promoting the charms of Japan in the U.S.?

  • I was very happy to see that many people were interested in Japan and Hokkaido. Learning English is important, but I think having a good grasp of information about Japan and being able to convey it is important as well. It was surprising that American schools have almost no club activities, students have to do lots of homework, and school hours starts early in the morning and finishes early too.
  • I was impressed with the popularity of Japanese animation and manga in the U.S. Many Americans enjoy them. I like manga, so I talked a lot about that. Americans really like manga too, and I saw them draw a picture of their favorite manga characters or imitated them just like Japanese children do. My English wasn't perfect and they didn't speak Japanese, but I believe we could understand each other without missing every single word when we were talking about manga.

2. What would you like to pass on to people in your community and school after you return to Japan?

  • English shouldn't be thought of as just a subject to learn, but as a language. Of course grammar is important but you don't have to use it perfectly. If you have a desire to communicate something, people will understand you. I'd like to tell people in my community not to have a negative image of English so much.
  • I'd like to say that there are many people with different ideas, just like there are various languages, religions, and lifestyles. By talking a lot with American people and experiencing their culture and everyday lives, I really felt that each person has his or her own set of values. It seems to me that people around me stick to their own values too much, but I don't think this is only the case with the Japanese. What is inconceivable for someone could be something usual for another person. I will be able to enjoy my life more if I accept other people as they are.

3. Please freely describe your experience in the KAKEHASHI Project.

  • I am sincerely happy to have participated in the KAKEHASHI Project. It was hard to prepare for the presentations and sometimes I felt insecure because this was the first experience for me, but I could have a greater sense of achievement than I had expected. I was also able to get one step closer to my dream. From now on I'd like to improve my English skills and take part in activities that will maximize the benefit obtained from this experience. I hope to continue to work hard keeping in mind the gratitude for everyone who was involved in this project.
  • We could get a better understanding of our life and also improve our English by preparing for the presentations. I met many people and had many wonderful experiences during the two-week dispatch. As a result of participating in this program, I had a desire to study English more in order to be able to explain my thoughts and feelings more precisely just like I do in Japanese. I hope that someday I will speak English fluently and become one of the KAKEHASHI bridges between Japan and the United States.
