Description This is a collection of B4-size photo panels intended as an auxiliary instructional resource for teaching vocabulary and introducing social and cultural circumstances in Japan. The panels are organized in five series: Clothing, Food, Shelter, and Associated Items; Community Life; Nature and Leisure Time; Social and Ceremonial Occasions; and Daily Life. It comes with a manual for teachers. There is also a "Photo Panel Collection CD-ROM".

The explanations on the reverse side of the panels are written using vocabulary and grammar found in Level 3 and 4 of the "Japanese Language Proficiency Test: Test Content Specifications" so that students of Japanese at the elementary level can read them. The explanations present verbs and other related vocabulary items that are used in connection with the subject matter shown in the photographs so that they can also be used for study.
About the Manual for Teachers
The manual is a separate volume that provides more detailed commentary than found in the explanations on the reverse of the photographs, incorporating material introducing conditions and circumstances in Japan, statistical materials, and so on. This manual was written as a reference for teachers, but it has also been made usable for students at intermediate and higher levels, with vocabulary and grammar found in Level 2 of the "Japanese Language Proficiency Test: Test Content Specifications." Kanji for vocabulary items that are above Level 3 all have kana glosses showing their pronunciation.
How to Use the Teaching Materials
These teaching materials are expected to have a wide variety of applications, depending on classroom needs. A number of examples of possible uses are shown below for reference:
(1) Vocabulary Introduction: For learning the vocabulary for things shown in the photographs, and learning related verbs and adjectives.
(2) Sentence Pattern Introduction and Practice: Use combinations of photographs to introduce and practice sentence patterns from textbooks.
(3) Conversation and Writing Practice: Practice holding conversations or writing on topics related to photograph subject matter.
(4) Use as Teaching Material for Reading Comprehension: Have students read the explanations on the back of the photographs. Intermediate level students can also use the commentaries in this manual.
(5) Introducing Conditions and Circumstances in Japan: The photographs can be used, with reference to the manual, as teaching material for introducing conditions and circumstances in Japan.

Photo Panel Collection V Daily Life This series uses four Japanese families as models to introduce day-to-day actions and activities, such as Getting Up and Sleeping, Meals, Beauty and Health, Going to School and to Work, Study, Work, Housework, Social Interaction, Hobbies and Play, and so on.
