"Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" is a collection of resources for creating textbooks and teaching materials, the first such collection of its kind. We well explain 'what is a collection of resources for creating textbooks and teaching materials' and 'how it can be used', so that all who have obtaind this collection may use it effectively.

1. What is "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô"?
"Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" is a compendium of grammar notes, sample sentences, and activities to use as references when creating textbooks and teaching materials for secondary-level learners studying Japanese overseas. In order to devise suitable textbooks and teaching materials for the learners, textbook creators need to adjust these resources according to the goals and curriculum of the programs as well as the situations of teachers and students.
"Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" is made up of 'Setsumei-hen(Grammar Notes)' and 'Renshû-hen(Activity Book)'. In devising a two-part collection, we thought in terms of the learning environment and learning objectives of students learning Japanese, as shown in the chart to the left. We have collected explanations and sample sentences needed for understanding the structure and usage of Japanese in 'Setsumei-hen'. In 'Renshû-hen', we have brought together practice methods that aim to help the learners internalize and use the language.

In writing these materials, we have taken the following points into consideration:

  • To keep in mind the notion of communication in Japanese between learners overseas.
  • To keep in mind the interests of foreign textbook creators and textbook users.
  • To try to make the materials appropriate both for learning about Japanese and for learning to use Japanese.
  • To offer a model of step-by-step learning.
  • To demonstrate the possibilities of making use of drawings, illustrations, and other visual aids.

2. "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" as a Model of Composing Teaching Materials
Our aims in compiling "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" are both to provide a collection of resources and to demonstrate a model of composing teaching materials. We believe that it is important to keep in mind step-by-step learning, the establishment of goals for learning, and giving the learners a feeling of accomplishment when creating textbooks and teaching materials. "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" is therefore put together in the following way as a model for teaching materials that specifically illustrate the above. Both 'Setsumei-hen(Grammar Notes)' and 'Renshû-hen(Activity Book)' are put together in the same way.
(1) About the Blocks

Each Block is a unit of teaching content, and there are twenty Blocks in all.

The Blocks are numbered 1 through 20, and the numbers indicate the cumulative order and levels of learning.

(2) About the Topics
Each Block corresponds to a Topic which concerns the learners' everyday surroundings and which has been created with the lives of overseas learners in mind. The Topics move progressively farther away from the learners' surroundings: "Home School Town My Country and Japan," with each block corresponding to the expanding scope of discussion. 1 This progression of "Home School Town My Country and Japan" is repeated five times in the twenty blocks, and each group of four indicates one of the five levels of instruction.
(3) The Arrangement of the 84 Grammar Items
The 132 Items are distributed among the 20 Blocks, bearing in mind both the degree of difficulty and the linguistic activities connected with the Topics.
