(1) What is "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô"?
It is a collection of resources for creating textbooks and teaching materials for junior and senior high school students learn Japanese overseas. Teachers may use these resources as they wish, selecting the parts they need, substituting other vocabulary or sample sentences, and translating as necessary. This is not a textbook for learners.
(2) For whom is "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" intended?
It is a book for people who create Japanese language textbooks and teaching materials for overseas junior and senior high school students. It may also be useful for teachers who need to create materials for use in their classrooms.
(3) With what kind of students in mind was "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" created?
It was created with the needs of junior and senior high school students overseas in mind. However, only textbook writers and teachers, not learners, should use it directly.
(4) What does "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" consist of?
It consists of 'Setsumei-hen(Grammar Notes)' and 'Renshû-hen(Activity Book)'.
'Renshû-hen(Activity Book)' comes with a tape.
(5) What does 'Setsumei-hen(Grammar Notes)' contain?
It contains commentary on the structure and usage of the grammar Items. It also contains sample sentences relevant to the lives of junior and senior high school students. There are also many illustrations, charts, and tables that make the sentence patterns and particles easier to understand.
(6) What does 'Renshû-hen(Activity Book)' contain?
There are many levels of activities, from practice with words and sentence patterns to practice in communication among learners. There is a wide variety of activities, including interviews to be done in pairs, games to be played as a group, exercises to be read and written individually, and tapes to be listened to by the whole class.
(7) What level of teaching materials can "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" be used to create?
It is intended for the first half of the elementary-level Japanese, corresponding to Level 4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

'Setsumei-hen(Grammar Notes)' can be used to create simple reference books on grammar for learners or collections of sample sentences for teachers. 'Renshû-hen(Activity Book)' can be used to create collections of dialogues, listening comprehension materials, reading comprehension materials, composition materials, and collections of classroom activities.
(10) In what language is "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" written? How much Japanese does a person need to know in order to read it?
It is written in Japanese. There are some difficult words, such as grammatical terms, but it is written so that teachers who have acquired at least the intermediate level of Japanese may be able to read it. All the kanji are glossed with furigana (phonetic indications).
(11) How can "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" be used to create study materials for learners?
Some of the simple things that teachers can do include:
Changing the words in the sample sentences and dialogues to words that the students know well or can understand easily
Translating the explanations into the learners' native language
(12) Can "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" be used in Japan?
The explanations of the grammar Items, activities aimed for internalizing the structure of language, and ideas for communication practice can be used also in Japan. Since there are almost no practices using real-life like situations that take place in Japan, teachers would probably need to add them.
(13) What procedures should be followed if one is to create teaching materials using "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô" or photocopy the resources?
The Japan Foundation holds the rights of authorship to these resources, but no special procedures are necessary for copying them, modifying part of them, or translating them before using. However, please send a copy of the teaching materials that you have created to the Teaching Resources Division of the Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa, of the Japan Foundation. You do not have to bother with small items such as those used in everyday classroom instruction.
(14) Where can one buy "Kyôkasho o Tsukurô"?
It is not for sale and cannot be bought in bookstores. Please apply to the Teaching Resources Division of the Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa, of the Japan Foundation.
