1.Ayu Utami (Indonesia)
Ayu Utami

Novelist/Journalist; Editor, Kalam
Work Information:

· In addition to being one of the editors of Kalam, Ms. Utami is a novelist and a political activist. While working as a reporter for the newsweekly Forum Keadilan (Forum for Justice), she joined other journalists to establish the underground Alliance of Independent Journalists (AIJ) in 1994. Soon after she began work with the Institute for the Study of Free Flow of Information (ISAI).
· Publications include a booklet on the Soeharto family's wealth. She also received the Best Novel of the year (1998) by the Jakarta Arts Council for her first novel, Saman. She is a prolific writer of essays on popular culture, language and literature.

2.Masaaki Ohashi (Japan)
Masaaki Ohashi

Assoc. Prof. of Development Studies, Keisen University
Work Information:
· (1980-1987), Prof. Ohashi worked with Shapla Neer: Citizens' Committee in Japan for Overseas Support. He also spent two and a half years in Dhaka as the Director of Shapla Neer's operations in Bangladesh, and acted as Secretary General from 1982-1987. He became Deputy Head of Delegation and Development Delegate in Bangladesh for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 1990-93.
· (1993-1998), became university professor. A one-year sabbatical took him to New Delhi studying NGO issues. At the same time, he participated in the Kosovo refugee relief operation in Albania as a delegate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies.

· As a student leader, Mr. Cho organized the first students' research group on pollution and environmental problems. He later pioneered the practice of investigative journalism covering the environmental problems caused by rapid industrialization in Korea. In 1997, he was awarded an official commendation from the Korean government while working for a critical opposition newspaper.
· Publications include Save Our Children-Voices from Onsan Village (1985), and Frankenstein or Brave New World (1999)

She also co-authored several other books including "Highway Robbery", in Pork and Other Perks: Corruption and Governance in the Philippines (1998), and "The Politics of Logging in the Philippines", in The Politics of Environment in Southeast Asia (1998).

· Ms. Teo was one of the founders of the Singapore Law Society's Criminal Legal Aid Scheme; a program designed to give assistance to people who cannot afford legal representation.
· Her extra-professional activities include engagement in community activities focussing on welfare and labour issues. She was involved in a Centre that helped foreign workers and ex-offenders in Singapore.

6.Sanitsuda Ekachai (Thailand)

Work Information:
· Ms. Sanitsuda's articles in The Bangkok Post on rural development, women's issues and Buddhism have inspired a whole generation of journalists to become more sensitive to cultural dilemmas, social inequalities and the plight of the poor.
She was awarded the A.H. Boerma Award from the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (1991).
· Publications include Behind the Smile: Voices of Thailand, and Seeds of Hope: Local Initiatives in Thailand, among many others.
