Design Contest Works

The Japan Foundation held its original Furoshiki Design Contest in 2009 in collaboration with its overseas offices. The Foundation elicited submissions from design students in 10 countries: Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, and Vietnam. In accordance with the contest theme, each design submitted offered an image representing a fusion of Japan and the contestant's home country.

A total of 87 furoshiki designs are presented in this catalog, including the three top prize winners selected from among all 373 submissions, which have been reproduced on actual furoshiki; 10 outstanding entries that were selected to be reproduced on commemorative postcards; and designs regarded as the leading entries from each country participating in the contest.

This catalog also features an essay by furoshiki expert Chizuko Morita and reports on efforts to popularize furoshiki at the Foundation's overseas offices.

The Foundation hopes this Furoshiki Design Contest provided an opportunity for young peoples studying design in each country to learn Japanese culture and the history of the wrapping cloths, as well as to improve their skill in monozukuri (manufacturing).
