The Japan Foundation Five-Year Plan for Japan-South Asia Cultural Exchange: 2007-11

The Japan Foundation has formulated "The Japan Foundation Five-Year Plan for Japan-South Asia Cultural Exchange: 2007-11" to strengthen the ties between South Asian countries and Japan.

For the purpose of executing the plan with the special focus on the swiftly changing situation in India, the Japan Foundation has entered into an agreement with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations to enhance their activities in the fields of cultural and intellectual exchange, collaboration in various arts, and the provision of information conducive to their activities in each other's country. The MOU was signed in Tokyo on 14th December 2006 by Mr. Kazuo Ogoura, the president of the Japan Foundation, and Dr. Pavan K. Varma, the director-general of the ICCR, in the presence of ICCR president, Dr. Karan Singh.

The Japan Foundation has re-opened its office in New Delhi on 4th of this month in new premises with enhanced facilities such as a mini-theatre, an exhibition hall, a library and classrooms to respond to the needs of Indian citizens.

The five-year plan will extend support to Japanese-language education at the secondary level in India, which the Government of India has initiated in line with the "Eight-fold Initiative for Strengthening Japan-India Global Partnership" decided by the Prime Ministers of both countries on the occasion of the visit of Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, the former Prime Minister of Japan, to India.
The Japan Foundation will encourage Japanese studies, especially, studies of contemporary Japan. Exchange among civil societies also will be promoted.
