Artist-in-Residence and Creative Core in the Cities 
    -Finland, Norway, and Hokkaido-

The Japan Foundation provides an open-caf– style forum where people can participate and discuss casually on various topics of international cultural exchange. We invite key persons in various field of cultural exchange to share information and experiences.

In June we will hold event on Artist-in-Residence*. We invite three guests from Finland, Norway, and Hokkaido to compare and to share their experiences of residency program and international network among these cities and countries.

* Artist-in-Residence programs offer opportunities for visiting artists, curators, and researchers to stay and work outside their countries or areas for a certain period of time. These programs offer grants and supports such as travel fees, accommodation, and studios for their creative work.

Henna Harri

Director, Helsinki International Artist-in-Residence Program

Born in Rovaniemi, Finland. After receiving Master degree at the University of Lapland, she also received a post graduate diploma in Art as Environment at the Manchester Metropolitan University in 1994. She worked for the Arts Council of Lapland as a Visual Arts Officer (1999-2003), and FRAME - Finnish Fund for Art Exchange - as a Coordinator (2003-2009).

HIAP - Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Programme is the largest international residency centre in Finland and the only one operating in the capital. The program is focused primarily on the Visual Arts, but is also offered for curators, dancers, choreographers, writers and researchers within several special programs. HIAP is based in The Cable Factory (Kaapelitehdas), a renovated factory of telephone cables, which is now the home of offices and studios of around 250 artists and art organizations.

Marita Isobel Solberg

Marita Isobel Solberg


Born in Tromsø, Norway. She works in wide areas such as ceramics, installation, performance, music and photography. After receiving Master degree of Visual Arts in Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2007, she came to Japan to participate in Artist in Residence program at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. During her stay she held an exhibition "Let's dot the world".


Hisashi Shibata

Director of S-AIR – Sapporo Artist in Residence, Board of Arts NPO Link, Vice representative of OYOYO MACHI x ART CENTER SAPPORO

Born in Sapporo, Japan. He has worked for launching various art spaces in Sapporo, such as Praha, artist studio complex and Recent Museum of Contemporary Art – now called Contemporary Art Institute.
He became the Director of S-AIR in 2003 after working five years as an executive officer (1999-2003). His recent projects include Snowscape Moere, a winter art project at Moerenuma Park, and OYOYO MACHI x ART CENTER SAPPORO to foster a network in the city. S-AIR received The Japan Foundation Prizes for Global Citizenship in 2008.

S-AIR – Sapporo Artist in Residence is one of the most established private AIR program in Japan.
In addition to the residency program, S-AIR has developed a series of other art projects in the city. S-AIR has its office in the ICC Intercross Creative Center, an incubation center for creative business.
