The Japan Foundation and the British Council will co-host a forum entitled, “The Power of Music: Connecting with Communities” on Wednesday, April 18, 2012.
At this event, we will invite Kathryn McDowell, Managing Director of London Symphony Orchestra, as a keynote speaker to introduce the LSO’s innovative music education and community programme called ‘Discovery’. She will also discuss with other guest speakers from key cultural organisations proactively running activities to connect music with wider audiences in Japan aiming to revitalize the communities.
In recent years, cultural organisations such as orchestras, concert halls and art museums in Japan are facing difficult times due to budget cuts and are required to build new business models and develop new audiences in order to survive. A social role for theaters and music halls has been attracting more attention while there has been an active conversation to develop legal foundations for theaters and music halls at national government level. Furthermore, in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, people have a renewed realisation of the importance and power of community halls and local orchestras. In this forum, speakers will introduce examples from the UK and Japan to engage in a far-reaching discussion around these issues.
