Asian Contemporary Artist Solo Exhibition Series Ⅲ

Lee BulThe Japan Foundation Asia Center is pleased to present "Lee Bul: Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which will be the third exhibition in our series of Asia Contemporary Artist Solo Exhibition which was first launched in 2000. In this exhibition, we will exhibit works by Lee Bul, who is one of the leading artists in the international art scene today.
Lee Bul was born in 1964 in Yongwol, Korea. She began to attract international attention in the 1990s. Not only has she been selected as No. 1 Korean artist among those aged 35-45 by Korean art critics and professionals, she has also been invited to Venice Biennale (1997) and Istabul Biennale (2001), establishing her status internationally as one of the most important artist today. Two of her solo shows are currently on tour in Europe and North America. Her works are now in some collections in Japan, but other than her solo show at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and her participation in Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2000 and some other group shows, opportunities to see her work have been limited, particularly in Tokyo. This solo exhibition will be a long-awaited large-scale exhibition introducing her work here.
For this exhibition, Lee Bul will show her new installation work, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," together with approximately 40 drawings related to this installation. The title of the new work refers to the map produced by Abraham Ortelius in the 16th century during the Age of Great Voyages. How will Lee Bul map out our world for the future? We hope that this exhibition will be an opportunity for our viewers to see the new frontier of her work.
We would like to kindly ask for your assistance in publicizing this event. Thank you for your generous cooperation.
