Part One: Fukuoka Program "Focus on Asia. Best Selections 1991 - 2000"
Part Two: Asia Center Program "Guru Dutt Retrospective"

With Fire as Witness

Sandy Lives

Ferocious Saint Lord of Gobi

The Focus on Asia - Fukuoka International Film Festival began in 1991, and the Japan Foundation Asia Center was founded in 1995 (formerly known as the ASEAN Cultural Center, founded in 1990). Both have continued to enthusiastically introduce the culture of various Asian countries throughout the 1990s, and at the end of this commemorative year will hold the "Joint Asian Film Festival".

The first part is the Fukuoka Project, "Focus on Asia. Best Selections 1991 - 2000". From the many well-received Asian films screened during these 10 years in Fukuoka, 11 works have been selected; most of which will be shown in Tokyo for the first time. The list includes "The Line of Destiny" ('56) by Lester James Peries, one of the finest directors in Sri Lanka's film history, and "How I Long for October" ('84) by Dang Nhat Minh, a film that cuts deeply into the state of post-Vietnam War society, and other gems.

The second part will be the Asia Center Project "Feature of the Legendary Indian Film Director, Guru Dutt". This is a retrospective of the works of Guru Dutt, who directed 8 films during the 1950s, a period considered to be the golden age in Indian film. Even after his death in 1964, he still has a great following in his homeland. We hope you will enjoy two of his most important films, Pyaasa ('57) and Kaagaz Ke Phool ('59), in which pessimism and a sense of humor combine to create a magnificent film world.
