The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP, headquartered in Bangkok) celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. As part of the events in celebration of the occasion, a competition was held among professional Asian cartoonists on the subject of "Economic and Social Development in Asia." A total of 280 entries were submitted from 13 countries. The Commission chose the three most superior works from among the entries, and awarded the gold, the silver, and the bronze prizes to the artists who created them at the general meeting of the Commission. Subsequently, an exhibition of the cartoons was held in Bangkok, April 16-30 this year.
The Asia Center has chosen 100 of the works entered in the competition for a cartoon exhibition that is to be held as part of the Center's program to introduce the economic and social aspects of Asia as follows. The exhibition is also slated for a tour throughout Japan that will continue until around August next year.
