Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (September 2015)

The author Sir Rutherford Alcock KCB (1809-1897) arrived in Japan in 1859 as a diplomat and served as the first British Consul General in Japan. This book provides a detailed account of Japanese society and culture based on his first three years of residence in Japan. Most of the illustrations in this book were drawn by the author.
