Donations of materials are accepted at the Japan Foundation (JF) Library according to the following conditions. Please review these conditions before making your donation.

Materials Accepted as Donations

The JF Library accepts the following materials as donations according to our collections policy.

  • Japan-related materials written in Western languages (only in the fields of humanities and social sciences)
  • Reference books and general information manuals pertaining to studies of Japan.
  • Japanese literature translated into other languages
  • Books and materials pertaining to international cultural exchange and cultural policies

Please note that we do not accept materials such as the following even if they meet the criteria for materials accepted as donations.

Acceptance and Handling of Donated Materials

  • The JF Library is entrusted with the decisions on whether or not to accept donated materials.
Materials sent without contacting us in advance may not necessarily be accepted into the collection. (We do not contact donors to communicate acceptance decisions or the reasons). We accept materials that we deem necessary after taking into consideration factors such as the composition of our collection and available space.
  • The JF Library is entrusted with the handling of the materials
Materials that we receive and decide not to accept are either transferred elsewhere or disposed of. In some cases, we may even transfer or dispose of materials that had been accepted into the collection without contacting the donor due to changes to our collections policy, storage space limitations, or other inevitable circumstances.

Donation Procedure

  • Please either bring the materials in person during library opening hours or send them by postal mail (we ask that donors cover the cost of bringing or mailing the materials).
If you wish to receive confirmation of whether or not we will accept the materials you are offering, or if you are donating a number of books together (generally five or more), please make sure to email us a description of the materials you are donating (bibliographical information such as titles, authors, publishers, years published, and ISBNs) before sending them.
  • We generally do not issue receipts or thank-you letters.
