JET Training Program for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language

The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa (JFJLI) (Saitama Prefecture) offers a training program for The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET) participants who are interested in becoming Japanese-language teachers or wish to engage in Japanese-language education in the future.

The training program primarily consists of interactive workshops where participants draw on their experiences in Japan to develop practical approaches to teaching Japanese.

In addition to preparing participants for future teaching roles, the training also provides skills and insights that can be applied to their current work on the JET Programme.
Please note that this training program is not for studying Japanese. All classes are conducted in Japanese

May 11 (Mon.), 2026 ~ May 20 (Wed.), 2026 (10 Days)

To join the program, please complete the application form and submit it. Applicants must obtain approval from their host institution before applying. In addition, please confirm with your institution how participation in this training will be treated in the workplace (as a business trip, or by taking paid leave to attend privately).

Eligibility:

  1. Be participating in JET during the training period (May 11–20, 2026)
  2. Have an interest in becoming a Japanese-language teacher or working in Japanese-language education in the future or have prior experience teaching Japanese and wish to continue teaching.
  3. Meet one of the following Japanese-language proficiency requirements:
    1. (1) Level B1 or higher on the CEFR or the JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (JFS), or equivalent
    2. (2) Level N3 or higher on the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), or equivalent
    (For other requirements, please refer to “Outline of the Program & Application”)

Number of Participants to be Accepted:

Approximately 35. The program may be canceled if there are not enough participants. If the number of applicants exceeds 35, the selection will be conducted by JFJLI.

Contents of the Program:

  1. To develop an understanding of communicative approaches to teaching Japanese.
  2. To design classroom activities for teaching language and culture by drawing on participants’ experiences in the JET Programme.

Cost:

  1. There is no tuition fee. Instructional materials are included and provided free of charge.
  2. In principle, participants are required to stay at JFJLI. Accommodation will be provided free of charge.
  3. Participants are responsible for their own meals, daily living expenses, and transportation fees to and from the Institute.
