The Lee Soo Hyun Youth Exchange Program
Under this program, Korean high school students who are studying Japanese in Korea or those with an interest in Japanese society and culture are invited to Japan. The participants obtain a deeper understanding of Japanese language, society, and culture. The program also provides Korean students with the opportunity to interact with young Japanese students of the same generation. The program was established to honor the actions of Lee Soo Hyun, a Korean exchange student who died in 2001 as he attempted to save the life of a passenger who had fallen onto the tracks at JR Shin-Okubo Station in Tokyo.
Program Duration
2 weeks (from January to February)
Eligible Participants
High school students from Korea studying the Japanese language.
- *Based on recommendations by each school principal, participants for this program are selected by the Japan Foundation, Seoul, the Consulate-General of Japan in Jeju, the Korean Japanese Association, the Korea-Japan Cultural Exchange Association in Busan, and Global Institute for Japanese Studies at Korea University and Department of Japanese Language and Literature.
Program Content
- 1.Visits to Relevant Organizations
Visiting the Japanese language school attended by the late Mr. Lee Soo-Hyun and JR Shin-Okubo Station to reflect on his great achievements and pay tribute. - 2.Japanese-Language Class
To deepen students' understanding of Japanese language, society, and culture and help them acquire useful Japanese-language skills for exchange by using the Japanese they have learned so far, classes such as the following will be offered:
- Preparations for High School Visit, Home Visit, and the Kyoto Study Tour; Kansai Dialect Guide
- Reflection: Discussing feelings and thoughts arising from experiences during the training.
- Japan-Korea High School Student Collaborative Project: Activities to share ideas through discussions and collaboration with Japanese high school students learning Korean.
- 3.Exchange Program
- (1)By visiting a Japanese high school and interact with students, learn about the values of Japanese people of the same age.
- (2)Collaborate with Korean high school students studying Japanese in Japan to deepen mutual understanding.
- (3)Interact with Korean international students enrolled at Japanese universities to gain information about studying in Japan.
- 4.Cultural and Social Experience Program
- (1)Home Visit: Short visits to the homes of high school students to experience daily life in Japan.
- (2)Cultural Experience: Experience several aspects of traditional Japanese culture.
- (3)Study Trips: Learn about the diversity of Japan through study trips to Tokyo and Kyoto.
