Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (July 2015)
This month’s book to be displayed is “Japon, Indo-chine, Empire Birman (ou Ava), Siam, Annam (ou Cochinchine), Péninsule Malaise, etc., Ceylan,” published in 1850 in Paris.
The author, Adolphe Philibert Dubois de Jancigny (1795-1860), was a French diplomat and researcher of Oriental Studies. Although he had never visited Japan himself, he succeeded in writing about Japan in great detail by referring to documents on Japan, written by researchers, including Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866). The book also contains more than 10 lithographs including a map of Japan and portraits of people.
