Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (February 2017)

This month’s book to be displayed is “Die Expedition in die Seen von China, Japan und Ochotsk: unter Commando von Commodore Colin Ringgold und Commodore John Rodgers, im Auftrage der Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten unternommen in den Jahren 1853 bis 1856, unter Zuziehung der officiellen Autoritäten und Quellen,” authored by Peter Bernhard Wilhelm Heine (1827-1885), and published in Leipzig in 1858-59.

Born in Dresden, Heine later immigrated to the United States. He accompanied Commodore Perry on his expedition to Japan, and is well known as the illustrator of its official narrative, “Narrative of the expedition of an American squadron to the China Seas and Japan: performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the command of Commodore M.C. Perry, United States Navy, by order of the government of the United States,” published in 1856.

“Die Expedition in die Seen von China, Japan und Ochotsk” is an account of a U.S. surveying expedition to the North Pacific. Translated into German by Heine, it includes various illustrations of the expedition.
