Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (June 2016)
This month’s book to be displayed is “Bladen over Japan,”published in The Hague, the Netherlands in 1852.
It was authored by Joseph Henry Levyssohn (1800-1883), who served as chief official of the Dutch Trading House in Dejima, Nagasaki. The letter and documents from U.S. lawyer Aaron Haight Palmer (1782?-?) in Chapter 3 concern the U.S. plans to dispatch a fleet to Japan and request the reopening of the country.
