Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (June 2017)

This month's book to be displayed is Yo-San-Fi-Rok: l'art d'élever les vers à soie au Japon, translated by Johann Joseph Hoffmann (1805-1878) and published in Paris in 1848.

The original Japanese edition Yōsan Hiroku is a guide on sericulture techniques published in 1803 by Morikuni Uegaki (1753-1808), who was a Japanese sericulturist during the Edo period. The Japan scholar Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) brought a copy of Yōsan Hiroku back with him to the Netherlands, and it was subsequently translated into French by Hoffmann. This French translation introduced Japanese sericulture techniques and culture to the West.
